One of the few important decisions you yourself will need to make when playing DOOM: The Dark Ages is your difficulty level. This DOOM: The Dark Ages guide answers the question: What difficulty should you choose?
What Difficulty Should You Choose in DOOM: The Dark Ages?

At the beginning of the game, we strongly recommend choosing Ultra-Violence as your starting difficulty level. The new game feels quite a bit easier than the series' past two games, to the point where returning players will probably find Hurt Me Plenty too easy. Even if you're a newcomer, we still suggest Ultra-Violence as the DOOM games are generally meant to be harder than others.
If you get through a few Chapters and you're finding the title a bit too hard, then you can freely adjust the difficulty level on the pause screen. You will not lock yourself out of earning any Trophies by doing so, meaning this choice is entirely about finding the right balance for you. Similarly, if the game is still too easy on Ultra-Violence, then you can go up to the next difficulty option after it.
