Far Cry Multiplayer Shooter

Ubisoft has effectively pulled the plug on a yet-to-be-announced Far Cry project — a multiplayer extraction shooter that's apparently been "rebooted" following an internal review.

This leak comes via the ever-reliable Insider Gaming, and suggests that, once again, Ubisoft is really struggling to align its business at present.

We first heard about this unorthodox Far Cry title back in 2023. At the time, Insider Gaming reported that 'Project Maverick' was in development alongside a more traditional Far Cry sequel — widely believed to be Far Cry 7.

As you might expect, the leak didn't go down well with a lot of Far Cry fans. Given how often we see live service efforts stumble and fail to recover, many labelled this extraction shooter as a waste of resources — even though no one had actually seen the game in action.

Still, it's starting to sound like Ubisoft didn't think much of the project either. Supposedly, Maverick's "dedicated tech team" was moved over to Far Cry 7 at the end of last year, signalling the project's demise. Now, the plan is to take Maverick back to the prototyping stage while Far Cry 7 soldiers on.

Indeed, it seems as though all of this ties back into Ubisoft's current goal of streamlining production. The publisher's quite clearly refocusing on its heavy hitters — like Assassin's Creed Shadows — while it trims the fat off its wider portfolio. But of course, this means that Shadows and the eventual Far Cry 7 have to strike a chord.
