Ubisoft Battle Royale

Ubisoft has a new battle royale game in development, reportedly.

According to Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson — who, we must reiterate, has an immaculate track record when it comes to the French publisher — this project is "heavily inspired" by Respawn Entertainment's Apex Legends.

Its working title is apparently 'Scout', and it's been in the oven for around two years or so. Much like the aforementioned Apex Legends, it's set to be a hero-based shooter.

The most interesting part of this report, though? 'Scout' was supposedly greenlit when Ubisoft execs identified a gap in the battle royale market, with games just like Apex Legends in gradual decline.

But this is a potentially dangerous path to go down, in our humble opinion. Another recent, data-driven report has strongly suggested that while battle royale games are falling off in terms of popularity, it may be down to the heaviest of hitters — that is to say Fortnite — simply dominating the genre.

The question then is whether there really is room for a new challenger in the battle royale space. Let's not forget that Ubisoft has previously tried to penetrate this market with 2020's Hyper Scape — a title that was shut down just 18 months after its release.

So, what do you make of this? Is Ubisoft mad for trying to push another battle royale? We dare you to be positive in the comments section below.
