There's One Positive for Physical Fans Amid PS5's Price Increase Chaos 1

PS5 is getting a price increase across Europe and Australia, as we’re sure you’ve already heard.

Sony cites a “challenging economic environment”, and while it’s clear the world is going through tough times, we can’t help but ponder why said climate doesn’t ever appear to affect the US. This is the second price increase that’s specifically targeted Europe and Australia, after all.

There is one small nugget of good news for fans of physical games, though: the Japanese giant is actually decreasing the price of its Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive.

As pointed out in our article from earlier today, the optional accessory will now cost £69.99 / €79.99 / AUD $124.95 / NZD $139.95. That’s a reduction of £30 in the UK, which is significant.

Considering there are no price changes planned for the PS5 Pro, this actually makes it a little more affordable to upgrade now – especially if you’re still a big consumer of physical media and wanted a disc drive to go along with the supercharged console. It also perhaps shows that Sony does still believe in providing consumers with playable boxed options.

So, depending on your specific situation, there’s a small sliver of positivity to be found here.

But generally we’re talking about PS5 getting more and more expensive the older it gets, and that’s not good for the brand, not good for console gaming at large, and certainly not good for consumers.
