Mafia The Old Country Open World

Mafia: The Old Country will not follow in the open world footsteps of Mafia 3, developer Hangar 13 has confirmed.

As part of an official FAQ page on the game's website, one question specifically asks: "Does Mafia: The Old Country feature an open world?"

The answer: "No. Mafia: The Old Country is a linear, narrative-driven game."

Despite the title's previous trailers showcasing a vast Sicilian countryside, it sounds like you won't be able to fully explore it. Instead, The Old Country is clearly gunning for a story-first approach.

To be fair, Mafia 3 was heavy on storytelling as well — but the cutscenes would often by broken up by bouts of open world busywork. This particular aspect of the game was criticised by both professional reviewers and players — so it makes sense that Hangar 13 has opted for a much tighter experience this time around.

The older Mafia titles featured open maps that you could drive around in and explore to some extent, but to call them proper open worlds would be generous. We wouldn't be surprised if The Old Country provides a similar structure at certain points in the campaign.
