The longer your individual play session in Oblivion Remastered is, the worse the RPG performs, the tech experts Digital Foundry have claimed.
In a post-launch test conducted across all platforms — including base PS5 and PS5 Pro — the outlet reveals a potential memory leak in the game is resulting in a gradual decrease in performance relating to the frame rate. Even on a fresh boot, Digital Foundry highlights how the 60 frames-per-second target isn't always met, and actually becomes a rarity the longer your session is left active.

In a comparison between a freshly booted save compared to one that had only been left running for 15 minutes, Digital Foundry experienced as much as a 15fps difference, where what it refers to as a "charged playthrough" was running at around 45fps while the fresh boot was at 59fps.

The longer you leave your session running, the camera on horseback shifts to where you can hardly see your character or steed while riding. Essentially, the outlet suggests resetting the game every 15 minutes or so to avoid these issues on the current build.
Digital Foundry states the game "urgently" needs a "proper patch" to solve these issues across all platforms. While sharing praise for the remaster marking the chance to revisit an RPG classic, the outlet states it's not being "done justice when so much technical baggage gets in the way of the experience".

Welcome back, PS3 Skyrim
Classic Bethesda game problem. It was particularly bad in Fallout New Vegas (creation engine) because as I understand it the game loads areas and never truly clears them once you leave until you restart the game. So in OBLIVION I think it's the same- as you play one session the more places and people & things getting loaded into your game the more it bloats and tanks the frame rate, crashes your game. I think it was called cell purging or something.
And people still adore this remaster...
Bethesda jank confirmed.
Wonder how many gigabytes the patch will be 🤔
Probably something to do with it running on the Creation Engine. Bethesda are going to keep running that engine despite all of the technical issues, just out of spite at this point, making sure you get the most authentic Bethesda RPG experience!
And people give Bethesda games 9/10 and 10/10 when they're filled with glitches and bugs like these, yet better games get trashed around and dragged through the mud for less.
I guess reviewers are either paid by Bethesda or they're going out of their ways to suck their **** for some reasons. But then again, the Bethesda fanbase is so dumb. They released Skyrim 5000 times and people probably bought it on all systems. Todd Howard must be laughing so hard.
I remember when I played it on Xbox 360 back in the day the more saves you made the slower the game ran, combine that and it slowed down even more the longer you played it just like here. I just closed the game and started it up again to fix it but dear Lord it was annoying.
@GigaGaia Can't say I've seen anyone give a Bethesda game a 9 or a 10.
Virtuoso did such a great job remaking Oblivion that they kept Bethesda's bugs.
@Weeze86 Skyrim was unplayable on my PS3. I just got the Bethesda Logo followed by a black screen.
@RubyCarbuncle I remember every time I went into deep water the game crashed without fail. And this was long after the game's release.
I haven’t seen anything like this so far. I’m about 24 hours in and usually play for a few hours at a time
Everyone ***** on the game just because of some bugs and glitches yet the games are truly magical and super fun. I mean some frame drops are not gonna detract from my enjoyment of the game, I played oblivion on xbox360 and PS3 back in the day, and Skyrim on PS3 and it dropping to under 15fps especially when you got 40+ hours on the game and so many dungeons cleared and doors opened the ram couldn't keep up with all the logistics, yet I still managed to platinum it and Fallout 3, and platinumed both the PS4 and PS5 Skyrim. The games are just fun, and if some frame drops bother you that bad then I feel sorry for you. I enjoy the games for the games, I not monitoring how smooth it is
Like others have said, typical creation engine problem.
They seriously need to work on a new engine, it's just not on anymore,
I've been playing since release on PS5, typically for a couple of hours at a time, have had absolutely no problems whatsoever. Pushsquare are so damn negative all the time.
Sounds like what I had happen to me on PS3 back in the day. Only then the framerate was literally unplayable at like 5 fps!😂
I love Skyrim as much as the next guy but man. Bethesda sure does get away with some nonsense.
usual digital foundry they point out stuff that no one notices when playing the game.
guess what still a great game
I played Skyrim on PS3 (my only Bethesda game to have spent much time with) and really loved it, but I had to be very careful with the way I played. I had read on the internet about the gradually increasing save files and the longer you play it, the more bloated the file is and largely because each little piece of flotsam and jetsam you can interact with the game tries to remember where you moved it or dropped it or whatever. So I always was sure to close every door, close every drawer after opening it, put every item back exactly where I found it if I didn’t want to keep it, and leave every space as close to the same as I found it. By playing fastidiously like that I was able to keep my save file size consistently small and I had few problems even after spending 80+ hours playing the game to completion.
Still, this isn’t really acceptable. I would give it a pass on PS3 (which I believe it was eventually patched and played much better later on PS3), because it was a hard system to work on, but at this point this is a remaster of an old game on new hardware and it’s just not something that should be let go as charming BGS jank. The purpose of a remaster/remake is to get the game up to current gen gaming standards, not recapture the original problems just in higher definition. 😆
So it was really worth rushing the game to shadow release at the same time as Clair Obscur. More than 2 weeks after, COE33 is still in the top 10 of most played game on Steam, while Oblivion has disappeared with a continuously decreasing player base. Good job Bethesda, don’t change anything!
@Utterlynobody "Pushsquare are so damn negative all the time." Normally I'd agree with you but on this occasion they are Bob on. This remaster needed a lot more time in the oven as it has so many issues. I was hoping there would finally be a remaster of one of my all time favourite rpgs but I am really disappointed with how this has turned out. My brother bought it straight away and i held out and decided to buy forza horizon 5 instead. He's not happy at all and the couple of hours I spent on his ps5 just bummed me out because it's really bad in places. This could have been one of those gaming moments that you look back on and smile but instead most people are grimacing.
Can’t believe they’ve done it again! Doesn’t sound like it’s as bad as last time but yeesh.
@RubyCarbuncle Yeah I remember playing it on 360 for the first time and without a "patch" or "update" since my console's connection wasn't working properly at the time so I got the forever mourning bug for the werewolf questline. Tried every fix and reset and it just never worked so once I finally got the connection on my xbox working for the first time and that patch downloaded it was the most incredible thing for me.
This all sounds terrible, but in reality over 50 hours in with many hours-long sessions, it’s rarely noticeable, and it’s never affected my gameplay.
People get whipped up, but a fun game is a fun game, it’s not a precision action RPG, you don’t need a solid 60 frames (although that would be nice).
Bethesda Software IP + Bugs. Normal service has resumed.
Perhaps FPS foundry can provide actual value and fix the code for this game. Along with fixing the code for every other game they critic with their analysis software. Many people are still enjoying this game.
It's an absolute mess. Frame rate all over the shop. I've been blue screened half a dozen times at least. Map markers breaking constantly. Sometimes NPCs just stop dead and don't do anything.
I don't really care though. It being a total mess is part of the Bethesda charm.
That’s a pretty authentic remaster! Even the classic bugs have followed through.
@Vaako007 Where’s all the salt coming from? Digital Foundry do work with developers at highlighting issues with games to help them fix them. This is a good thing for consumers. But their job isn’t to fix it, that’s on the devs.
You can like / enjoy the game AND also admit it’s currently in a really buggy state. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.
Bethesda are really playing into that nostalgia for the PS3 vibes
Glitch happy game too.
Will people ever learn that defending or accepting garbage technicals like this just makes it less likely for the game to be fixed, and for them to do the same, but worse, next time.
This article is actually quite positive compared to the full DF review which also notes (amongst other things) crashes can be caused by the issues.
I did read a comment from someone yesterday who said that Sony had refunded them because of the issues - at this point Sony should just do a 'Cyberpunk', and let people choose if they want a refund - that might prompt a proper fix faster, and act as a warning for the future.
Would love to see this thorough analysis on games from the publishers that sponsor them…..
Happens in every single bethesda game since the dawn of time, same on xbox , deleting saves and clearing the cache improves the problem
@Nitefire7786 I enjoy games for the games too, but I enjoy games that (checks notes) work properly and don't have catastrophic performance issues. I used to watch my ex play Skyrim on PS3 and the framerate was so poor it gave me motion sickness. She eventually abandoned the game entirely because she got sick of progress-breaking bugs.
Just because you're happy to accept this utter slop doesn't mean you get to gaslight the rest of us by inferring we only care about framerates and not the games themselves.
@themightyant @Vaako007 That's like saying "why don't the reviewers who roasted Gollum fix it and make it into a 10/10 game".
And DF aren't dumping on poorly performing games for fun. They're reviewing the tech, and providing objective facts to consumers who want to make informed decisions about their game purchases. Lord knows they saved me from the PS3 version of Bayonetta.
As themightyant says, it's possible to enjoy a game and still be critical of the issues that one should be critical of.
Is this the worst game, on a technical level, of this generation? These guys are doing MGS Triangle too…
Glad I decided to wait before playing it, although by the sounds of it I could be waiting a while. Ah well plenty of other games to be playing anyway.
At least it doesn't freeze your console as PS3 version.
I think I'll just wait until PS6 to play this one then.
I’ve been playing on Series X via Game Pass. This isn’t something I have noticed, but I have only played a few short stints in between long sessions of Expedition 33.
@AdamNovice Hmm never had that issue myself. With me the more saves I made which was a LOT and the longer I played the framerate just got lower and lower. This being said I always reset the game so maybe that's why? who knows.
For people who didn't buy this AND Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, why you'd pick Oblivion over Obscur is beyond me. We should all know by now that Bethesda games are rarely in a fit state on launch.
The French release meanwhile has just released it's first patch weeks after release and been fantastic. This is the first game they've made.
I really don't understand what all the Oblivion fanfare is about.
@Nepp67 Ahh yeah I remember that now that you mention it. Indeed it was a relief when it was patched.
Bethesda have always made technically awful RPGs. They are beloved DESPITE their enormous CVS receipt lists of bugs and glitches. Don't @ me.
Not ***** on the games themselves, but since Bethesda sold out to Microsoft, their true nature comes through. Still giving glory and praise to their masters, while failing for anyone else.
Can anyone playing this confirm that the quest to un-do your vampirism is completable? That's when I got stuck, the quest giver was not interactive after I did the quest, I gave up after that.
@Nitefire7786 Well said
Digging into KOTN DLC at the moment. The performance issues only occur in the open world and don't really affect a playthrough. So glad I'm finally getting to experience this game, which is almost as good as Morrowind.
DF is clearly doing very well on YouTube with hyperbolic negativity that gets parroted by those who never intended to buy the game in the first place.
Thanks for this post. I guess Oblivion is off my to buy list now.
@CypherUK It's the first game they've made as this team but it was founded by ex-Ubisoft devs. The director had worked at Ubisoft since at least 2015. Goes to show what Ubisoft teams could've made given creative freedom.
I've played 36 hours and haven't noticed anything.
