PS5 added another 18.5 million units to its overall hardware total in the fiscal year ending 31st March, 2025. Of that total, 2.8 million units were tacked on throughout the company’s fourth quarter. That takes the worldwide total of current-gen system’s sales up to 77.7 million units lifetime.
Launch aligned, the PS5 is still trending approximately 1.4 million units behind the PS4, but it’s important to remember the console costs significantly more – even when adjusting for inflation. Its sales curve is almost identical to the last-gen system, however.
To compare to the previous fiscal year, Sony sold 20.8 million PS5 units, but it’s worth remembering the company was especially aggressive during this period, as the console had only just become readily available following the stock shortages caused by the pandemic.
The company sold significantly more software, however – 303.3 million versus 286.4 million the fiscal year prior – and held on to more monthly active users, topping out at 124 million. That’s a slight slide compared to the record-breaking 129 million the previous quarter, but the holidays always tend to bring the biggest numbers.
