Returnal's PS5 Pro Upgrade Overdelivers with Improved Image Quality, Performance 1

Tech experts Digital Foundry have put Returnal’s surprise PS5 Pro update through its paces, and the results are remarkable to say the least.

While dev Housemarque had promised improvements in resolution of up to 2.5x, the end result goes beyond that, as the release maxes out at 3072x1728 on Sony’s supercharged system, with a dynamic resolution scaling solution utilised.

The original game, while superb, had a base resolution of 1080p, which was temporally reconstructed to 1440p and then upscaled to 4K using checkerboard rendering. If you don’t understand any of these words, don’t worry – all you need to know is that the PS5 Pro version is resolving a much cleaner overall image.

Performance is, by and large, steadier as well. Digital Foundry reports that some boss battles, which had dips previously, are cleaned up – and the only downside are some micro-stutters, which occur as the dynamic resolution adjusts.

The PS5 Pro version still doesn’t match the ambition of the excellent PC release, which features ray tracing among other improvements.

But this free patch, released to celebrate Returnal’s fourth anniversary, does resolve a much better image than the launch version, making a final run before Saros releases an appealing proposition for PS5 Pro owners.
