The good news: the first Warhammer 40k: Space Marine game is getting a remaster!
The bad news: it's skipping PS5 for some reason — at least at launch.
Only announced for Xbox Series X|S and PC, the enhanced re-release will be available on Xbox Game Pass day one — which might indicate some kind of timed deal with the Team in Green. It's out on the 10th June.
Obviously, we got Space Marine 2 last year — a largely fantastic action shooter that built brilliantly upon its predecessor, which released all the way back in 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
Given how popular Space Marine 2 turned out to be, a revival of the first game makes all kinds of sense, but it's a potentially frustrating situation for PlayStation gamers.
It should be noted, though, that this remaster is being published by SEGA; the Japanese company was one of the original publishers — alongside THQ — of Space Marine all those years ago. The sequel is published by Focus Entertainment.
What do you make of this one, then? Are you sad to see Space Marine make a comeback, and then miss out on PS5? Drop your chainsword in the comments section below.

It’s definitely coming to PlayStation at some point and I can’t wait to experience it when it does!
Microsoft paid to it hit exclusively on Game Pass on consoles. Not the first and won't be the last time.
@ED_209 Remember when they said they don't like doing timed exclusives? Lol
Well that sucks. I avoided the original because the mp was so grindy. Would love to play just the campaign.
I don't care... I'll just run my PS3 copy...
Gamepass been insane this year, and here i was bummed out that Fable got delayed 😅
Was expecting the remaster to look a bit better. Not overly impressed with it. I wonder what price they are looking for.
Honestly fine with it. Xbox really has almost nothing going for it at the moment besides gamepass and my backlog is so insane at the moment that I’m ok with playing this later rather than sooner.
The Emporer provides? 🥲
Just have to wait 24/48 hours.
(Probably. )
A remaster of an Xbox 360 game is a whole different beast to a remaster of a PS3 game, which would have to be completely remade.
Hopefully that's the reason and it'll follow shortly after.
Its surprising developers arent asking them if they can get out of any timed exclusives seeing as xbox themselves are no longer doing it
Forgot remasters we've seen enough now
But i thought MS were against shady tactics like this? 🙄
Yeah apparently exclusives are only bad when Sony does them.
Anyway I played the original the day it released and it's an okay game but I remember being a bit disappointed with it by the time I finished it so I traded it for another game. I guess this is cool for people who've never played it before though.
Hasn't Phil himself cried about third-party exclusivity deals? Yet here we are.
Anyway, the Ultimate Edition is still available on the PS3 store for $29.99.
Ahh yes…shady business practices. And some people wonder why the vast majority of gamers don’t trust a word Phil says.
I dunno, I'm okay with this. Xbox is at a disadvantage, if it helps them stay competitive then that's fine.
I know that's a spicy take
I found space marine to be such a miserable slug when I played it on PS3 I think Microbox is doing PlayStation users a favour making this remaster a timed exclusive.
They should have remastered that game years ago.word up son
Never got Space Marines 2 cause i never played the first and figured a remaster would be coming. Just got to wait a little longer to play it on PS now
So Microsoft pays for third party exclusivity but gives away first party exclusives 🤔
Sounds like it might be more of a backwards compatibility issue to me? I've got to guess they turned this around pretty quickly after the success of Space Marine 2, but that porting the PS3 version to the 5 is taking longer than the 360 version to Series consoles.
The PS3s architecture being alot less PC like, which is basically what modern consoles now are.
@DennisReynolds Same with Sony. Oh wait.
I remember when playing Warhammer meant diligently painting the little figurines - ah that lovely smell of paint and plastic - then setting out the factions on a huge homemade diorama in the outbuilding or garden shed. Oh the 90's.
In true over the top internet fashion:
PLAYSTATION IS DEAD
I really don’t think people should be jumping the gun to blame Xbox for this. I mean maybe they paid for an exclusive but it’s pretty unlikely unless this is a really old deal they made. It will come to Playstation eventually, you will all be fine.
The remaster looks weird like it doesn't look that different compare to the original game. I still have my PS3 copy though so meh i don't care if this not coming to PS5. MS can keep it.
@cburg Sony and PS players don't act like they don't do it unlike MS and its players who pretend they don't do this stuff despite MS having more timed deals this gen then Sony has had.
@Lysterao Its not a port so its got nothing to do with BC.
Had a 360 copy, it had issues, got a PS3 copy and beat it (same with Bodycount or Wanted had 360 copies, didn't work or struggled to work, PS3 copies beat both, or Enchanted Arms not beaten but didn't have a working 360 copy). Space Marine 1 also had no BC on Xbox either so Gamepass is nice to see.
But hey Xbox had no Battle Engine Aquila so I guess why not. I'm enjoying BEA though. Wanted to play it again for years. Rven if Atari so different there.
Played Space Marine 1 before Space Marine 2 came out or when it did and beat it and waited on a time to play Space Marine 2. Like God of War series to 2018 (hated 2018 and experienced only the story the rest bored me to death of modern game design "substance" but that's besides the point).
Space Marine 1 & 2 are so similar and have improvements, some things I'd have wanted it to do of classesin campaign to prep for multiplayer but has none at all so to me it's just the first game again of different enemy factions around for too long and weapons given every so often (which was good of pacing in both games) but with new locations, bit better character feel I guess.... It's very like 1 and has improvements but also doesn't. Its feels like a 1.5 and new factions but same formula and I found it kind of eh 2. Not just because it was back to back for me either.
1 and 2 are so similar in ideas/pacing yet 2 does have it's higher strengths and differences no doubt.
I think a remaster helps for sure. I do think seeing one of the strategy games saying better textures made me laugh as the walls looked so bad yet character models looked good so yeah a questionable wording there and execution. XD
But to me the blurriness of PS3/360 versions was noticeable and yeah it being cleaned up is nice. It's a good game.
It feels like you want to compare it to Gears but it still feels like compared to many others with 'this mechanic is cool but cover based and strafe moving character feel of that era and still nowadsy that I'm sick to death of; that Space Marine 1 still is unique in it's approach then others being more trend following besides their highlights that are enjoyable and why I cared for any PS3/360 shooters I've bought over the years nowadays.
With so few modern story based shooters releasing and flopping while generic multiplayer ones that are just pathetically hilarious to look at of dumbed down design flop or get a pass.
So like it makes so much of difference, sigh. Even if some are also mechanically unexciting and the PS3/360 ones are mechanically engaging from the get go.
Something PS4/Xbox One and PS5/Series are so clear of generic movesets I go eh, why should I care about this game it's substance is in graphics/story not in gameplay, moving on. Or the ones that are flop. Thanks audiences or devs selling themselves on other things to impress/priorities and disappointing with too much focus on it like any other devs and making me laugh at that and sad for the mechanically engaging ones.
@Dan12836666
Do if a story driven game people should just give up and play the sequel.or.watch it on YouTube, right.....
Play whatever modern games you want, and ignoee this remaster then, no one is saying or forcing you to. xd
Some of us like playing all entri2s of a series or more games we never played not new only or new and teash releases.
Until modern games are less prioritized how they are nowadays and unappealing to me.
Old doesn't equal bad. Complaining about old is a dull argument. Shiny and new but slop is a waste of time and just cycling the same garbage. It's not shiny in a good way, it's just new and pathetic.
Also if most didn't play them how is bringing something they never played bad? They never experienced it, it can have different design (if people are willing to their then narrow experience and familiarity barrier kicking in and anything unfamiliar stopped because comfort/too old to have an open mind) there are plenty to experience.
Not the narrow minds of people that play only a few games, are too comfort focused, push other games aside because whatever had a first impression is stuck, and embrace barely anything and we get to the point we have in gaming, barely anything to compete well enough and the design we have nowadays. XD Yeah great mentality. Narrow experiences (financial is not the point in this either), fewer products and worse off. Yeah the gaming industry is doing great now, it really isn't.
I'm welcoming remasters with game design I ACTUALLY want to play where the substance is better of gameplay not story, themes, worlds, graphics and movesets/level design I find boring, lacking potential and garbage.
I would buy the retro versions of them even or back compat programs for (and have, whether mainstream or niche games).
Not modern game design I absolutely hate and refuse to buy till devs, pubs, execs change their mentality, till then they can repeat the same garbage they have since PS3/360 and dumbed down since PS4/Xbox One onwards. They keep repeating themselves so I keep laughing at them and not buying them. Audiences can buy whatever they want. I'm not contributing.
They make the ones I want to succeed with cool ideas fail and I refuse to fund the ones they like. So if that happens remasters or retro ones it is. If they don't offer it that's on them I will buy the retro versions instead.
That's not just AAA, that's AA, Indies in certain genres like platformers/racing/shooters (while adventure/puzzle do well, sometimes) among others with generic ideas in many games/genre or otherwise, character movesets, level design, objectives, skill trees/other systems, repetitive combat/story telling and imagination so inspired and barely their own or distinct and other excuse design games have had and go 'that's enough for gameplay, we don't care about games for gameplay the things that set them apart let's focus on the other stuff that doesn't make a game unique and focus on that more even though we have ideas, suck at it but think audiences will buy into our movie/tv show inspired but not even close products'. Hypocrites. They aren't writers or movie makers and waste their time.
Part 2:
Even AAA that split to form a new studio and go "we have a new publisher, do the same thing do and don't have the same budgets, make the same dumb decisions cyclically and fail...." What a waste of time they have with their cyclic mentality failing them and some's dramatic shifts trying but not understanding the genre, audience or design cues besides their own new ideas to offer.
Sometimes some publishers help out with some decisions, other times they don't with how direction should be.
So I welcome remasters of games I actually want to play.
Sometimes their old design is more compelling then the repetition we get of modern games. Why else wouldn't I go to old games for what they offer, not because it's old, nostalgia or otherwise. If I never played them it's not nostalgia or for that era it's a thing called QUALITY.
Something it seems some people have for story/graphics and others like me as a gameplay type wanting more then the substance we don't get, want old games or enough of their competitive ideas/mentality (not 1 to 1 of course) not modern era slop.
Makes no sense when they’re putting their own games everywhere lol.
@Cambrius That's not how remastering works. Developers don't remaster each old console version for their respective modern console counterparts. They choose one version and use that as the base for the remaster for all modern platforms. Additionally, remastering one console version of a game isn't inherently more difficult than doing so with another console version. I think you are confusing remastering with emulation.
It's so weird we're getting forza and gears but xbox still does this exclusivity deals, I don't think there are any people that choose xbox over ps5 over this game.
Same with sony if the do 3rd party exclusive that doesn't include pc (like stellar blade), sony already sells their own exclusive games on pc, why they block 3rd party games pc release with exclusivity deals.
I'll skip on the remaster if it ever comes to PS5. I can fire up my physical copy on PS3 & play away offline. That's just me!
It certainly is a choice not to make money. Must've been a nice MS payout. Funny after all their anti-exclusives spiel.
@TheFakulty Same here. If I had played this on PS3, maybe it'd be refreshing to see it look a lot more crisp and run at 60FPS, but the trailer seemed basically identital to how I remember it looking like on PC back then.
While I really enjoyed this back in 2011, I feel like it could be a bit too monotone now, when even SM2 felt like that at times.
@DennisReynolds Not officially, but it's a remaster. Ultimately they ARE porting it from somewhere to get it working on PS5 and Series consoles. Now, maybe they're just using the original PC version rather than the 360/ps3 versions for their respective platforms, but either way they haven't entirely built the game from the ground up
Also, in what world have Xbox had more timed exclusive deals this gen than Sony? Frankly the timed part is irrelevant, the deals being short is better than permanent, in which case they've not had anywhere close to as many 3rd party exclusive deals.
@xDD90x No, you're right. They're probably using the PC version as the basis for the remaster. I'm mostly struggling to find a rationale for not releasing it on PS5. I don't think that Microsoft would bother wasting money for an exclusivity deal on a game this old, especially when they're releasing their games on Playstation now anyway. So I would assume some technical reason, but it just seems strange.
@Lysterao As someone who owns both a PS5 and a Series S i can say MS have had more timed deals and its not even close. The sheer amount of Indie timed exclusives is pretty absurd and far too many to name.
It got an Anniversary update last year I got it free on Steam last year
@DennisReynolds Okay, at least name enough for it to be more than PS then? I can't think of many beyond Stalker 2. I'm sure there have been more, but not many major ones.
As for pretending like they aren't, seem to recall Spny pretending they didn't pay for Black Myth Wukong exclusivity? And more importantly a whole load of permanent exclusivity deals, like Forespoken, FF16, Stellar Blade etc...
It's all just silly at this point, timed or otherwise no one should really do it, but timed is the lesser evil when compared to permanent
@Lysterao Black Myth isn't a timed deal and the Devs have confirmed that. Why would Sony lie? Why would Sony do zero marketing? Why is the PS5 version a mess? Why was the Pro update awful? Have some logic.
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/15-timed-xbox-console-exclusives-announced/1100-6480080/ Here's at least 15. There's also Palworld, Scorn, ARK 2, Tunic and more. As i said too many to name.
Timed deal? With how Microsoft has been putting their games on playstation lol was bg3 a timed deal for ps then? Or is this simply a case of the game not being ready for that system yet like darktide.
@DennisReynolds indie games most playstation players would never touch vs AAA like sfv, FF7 one of those was purposely kept off of Xbox being sony knew their fgc sucked and everyone played sfiv on 360.
Only need to look at console sales to see who's had the most impact with exclusivity deals and stop pretending ps players play indie games in the first place 😭
Been looking for the game all this year on PS3 and just today i found one, i wonder if its worth to get the PS3 after all, I hope these guys will release a physical edition or ill buy the PS3.
@JustinTimberlake Keep moving the goal posts.
Sony keeps games off other platforms "for some reason" all the time. Technically everything that has come to PS so far has been a timed exclusive, so it makes sense. I would expect more of this for certain games in the future because they want to drive users to Game Pass (PC/Cloud, not just Console).
