The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a third-person RPG from the genre specialists at OwlCat Games, and there's every reason to believe that it'll fill the Mass Effect-shaped hole in our hearts.
Seriously, the sci-fi adventure — which is based on the existing universe of the well-liked book series and TV show — is starting to sound a dream come true. In a new interview with CNET, creative director Alexander Mishulin says all the right things, outlining in-depth role-playing options and referencing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and even Persona 5.

"I'm not saying we are taking something from, say, Persona 5, but the approach, the idea that characters are front and center of the story and how they evolve all through the story up until the end is a little bit similar," Mishulin explains.
While Osiris Reborn does take place alongside the events of The Expanse's first two books and first two seasons of the show, you play as a custom character, joined by an original crew — a perspective that's apparently given OwlCat Games some welcome creative freedom.
"You will be having your own adventure with your own goals, choices, consequences in the same universe [with] all the major events unfolding in this universe alongside your story," says Mishulin.
But as alluded, it's the mention of detailed RPG systems that should have genre enthusiasts excited. Mishulin states that there's a big emphasis on player choice when it comes to builds and specialisations: "The RPG system is very open, allowing you to build whatever character you like. It's part of our vision of the game to allow you to experiment and find things you like."
Tying into character creation, you'll be able to choose a backstory and eventually side with different factions — and there's a weight to all of this, thanks to the already established world building of The Expanse.
If you've played Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader, you'll already know that OwlCat Games is perfectly capable of adapting beloved properties — but that's a CRPG (something that the studio's well known for), while Osiris Reborn is a Mass Effect-style third-person shooter.
As such, it'll be interesting to see how the developer gets on. We're yet to behold much of Osiris Reborn outside of some very brief gameplay clips at the end of its announcement trailer, but we're sure that more footage will be coming our way soon.

the expanse universe is a great setting for an action RPG
Owlcat are definitely one of the best when it comes to adaptions of complex worlds, like Pathfinder and Warhammer. They are, however, one of the worst when it comes to DLC. I don't want to play through a game multiple times just to play a DLC. Their games typically launch in quite a state too. Which is really annoying because I do genuinely think they're one of the best RPG developers today and if they had the money, could stand toe to toe with Larian.
Fingers crossed they make something great. I'm eager for a new Sci-fi epic.
Plead make it online multiplayer like Destiny 🤞
Freaking nuts how much choice they're is in gaming.
This will likely be another, " Oh I want to play that.... well... get in line kinda game"
I have 4 day weekends to and grown kids....
@N0CYmr0k 🤨
@N0CYmr0k I also think, having the ability to custom build a kind of unique 'class', then opening the story campaign up to have 2 other people join as a squad, rather than just ai partners, would be great.
Like R6 Vegas, in space.
Graphics at the end and destruction are top tier; looking forward to see more
The Expanse is my all time favorite show, I’m so excited for this.
I'm betting first half of the game is all sci-fi action, gripping set pieces, ship battles in space and fighting proto-molecule monsters. Second half is spent sitting at a table discussing the politics between Earth and the Belters, and gets very dull.
The Expanse is my favourite sci fi TV show after Battlestar Galactica. Hoping this will live up to the Mass Effect comparisons/hype.
Rewatched all The Expense seasons recently after announcement. Now I will try to read 1st book. I am slightly hyped for this game. Hopefully it is good.
And since mass effect is probably dead like da franchise there is no better time for other companies take the helm
@J2theEzzo
Yeah. No idea why so many ppl hate some games strictly cause they're multiplayer.
I think that Destiny 2 is simply nuts. Campaign, almost overwhelming lore, fantastic quests and exotic missions, dungeons and raids full with lore, well... even guns have some fascinating history behind them. All of this can be experienced with up to 6 friends.
Awesome.
I’m not the biggest Expanse fan (only read the first two books, never watched the show) but I absolutely love Owlcat’s games, and this looks very promising!
Love Owlcat. Wrath of the Righteous is incredible. Im one trophy away from the Platinum Trophy. Safe to say it's one of the hardest Platinum's in all of gaming
Immediately shot to the top of my most wanted. On book 8 of 9 of the series now and it has so much potential. Sounds like one of the best developers for something like this.
That trailer looks amazing. It's a totally different kind of game than they've ever done, I really hope they pull it off. Going to have to watch the show as a lead up to the games release
Given that Mass Effect is one of my all-time favorite game series, I'll definitely welcome more games like them. Hopefully it turns out to be good.
It looks nice but 80% of The Expanse appeal is the crew, so they have to nail the writing.
