Sony has confirmed that a new PS5 firmware update will go live starting today that's designed to improve the console's messaging system and usability "on some screens". Like previous system patches, it'll be delivered in a phased launch, so you might not get the option to download it straight away.
The single patch note for PS5 firmware update 25.04-11.40.00 is as follows:
- We've improved the messages and usability on some screens.
With only a mention of enhancements for the PS5 machine's messaging system, this appears to be an incredibly minor firmware update — there's not even a mention of the classic stability upgrades! Therefore, you're probably not missing out on much if the patch takes a day or two to land on your console.
However, if any secret new PS5 features are discovered in the firmware update, we''ll bring you coverage of them here.

No stability ? Poor show.
Shadow drops with Silksong built into the OS.
Nice, I have some screen.
Great news because I use the PS5 only for messaging.
Please either remove the welcome hub or make it that my PS5 isn't stuck for 30 seconds Everytime I boot it up.
Nice
As always these updates can not contain any huge changes all the time. These are often security related updates and that’s fine.
Are you blaming Apple and Co also for little security updates?
@Jrs1 I‘m glad that there are no stability improvements. That means there don’t seem to be imminent bugs and security concerns right now.
Yaaas, improved messages and usability on some screens. Can't wait to download when I get in from work.
@Max_the_German Unsurprisingly Sony don't specificy what they are patching. The lack of mention of stability updates doesn't stop them from having made bug or security fixes.
According to their Hackerone page, Sony have resolved 4 bug reports since the last firmware update
The PS5 will never be as stable as the PS4 - mainly due to that wonky design.
Be interesting to see if a equivalent PS4 patch turns up later...?
@Max_the_German I thought a German would appreciate workmanship and good stable engineering 😉
Well, it finally happened, we have achieved peak stability
@Jayslow Sounds like your PS5 is messed up? Literally never had such an issue on mine nor heard of anyone else with it.
@Jayslow
Have you tried customising and removing any widget which may be causing this?
It sounds like its an Internet connection issue or maybe a USB external drive - I use an internal SSD expansion and that has no effect.
NB I am assuming you started having issues the day the Welcome section arrived, as the PS5 can do checks (eg games licence) on boot which could be affected by internet issues.
@slabula it happened on my base PS5 and when switched to a PS5 pro. This is a known issue with the welcome hub. And yes shutting off your Internet connection does work. But kinda want that on!
@Jayslow I have PS5 pro I don't have that issue with the welcome hud at all
@Slayer25c yeah I meant if affects both. Doesn't affect everybody, but I have at least a couple friends it affects and it's been something people have been complaining about on Reddit since the update that introduced Welcome Hub.
@Jayslow Never heard of this. Certainly am not stuck on welcome hub for 30 seconds on boot, that’s not normal. UI is fluid here.
Have you tried booting into safe mode and using options like:
Outside of that does the issue persist if you unplug external drives, or switch to a wired or wireless connection?
Good luck.
It would be nice if they would allow removal of the three mandatory widgets from the home screen at any time, so can get a clean look theme the widgets annoy me lol
I only find the controller battery widget useful I don't care about the others. As for boot up and stability on my new ps5 slim I got from the wife at Xmas I've never had an issue with stability, it runs much nicer than my Ps4 pro!
@themightyant None of those solutions fix the problem for those affected by the issue. The ONLY fix is turning your internet off in the settings, but then you can't use most of your features on PS5 lol...
I'm affected too and the menu is SOOOOOOOO slow and laggy and worse yet I have a second rare issue that makes my PS5 have to rebuild my external hard-drives database EVERY SINGLE TIME I boot-up my PS5...🙀
@WiiWareWave Sorry to hear that. Tried to help, but i've got little else to suggest short of factory reset.
Though... If it's trying to rebuild the external drives DB on reboot are you 100% sure the issue doesn't exist if it's unplugged? I had a similar issue on a drive on PS4, initially it just took AGES to register all the games on the external (with the little HD icon in the corner) but in the end it was the USB cable, replacing that, rebuilding the database and leaving it for a few hours after booting it up fixed this for me.
Good luck!
There are rumours that the VRR problems are solved with this update!
@Jayslow try cleaning the fans etc..start in safe mode and rebuild the data base..never had your problem but it sounds like you need a good spring clean.
@WiiWareWave so it's an Internet issue? Wired or wireless? How many things are connected to your router? I manually assigned the ps5 it's own ip setting the final value to 150 because there's never going to be 150 things connected to my router and I also put my ps5's ip in my dmz..hope that helps..
@Max_the_German there were problems with vrr? Never had issues myself so I can't comment really. What were the issues?
@sanderson72 my ps5 is infinitely more stable than my ps4 ever was (which was pretty solid) as I've had far,far less crashes and the number of hard crashes on my ps5 can be counted on one hand. I hear lots of people having issues with their ps5's but I've honestly been very lucky by the sounds of it.
@Northern_munkey It’s about this phenomenon:

There are claims on Reddit that this problem were finally solved.
@Max_the_German so there was a stability update after all.
(Sony have specifically told Digital Foundry the issue has been fixed)
