Resident Evil Requiem PS5

Capcom has shared that it did indeed experiment with an open world and online multiplayer elements for Resident Evil Requiem before going back to the drawing board and making it an offline, single player experience.

Rumours prior to the game's official announcement suggested this was the case, and now the publisher has confirmed those tests in a development diary video. Alongside the first few glimpses of gameplay, additional video and interviews reveal Capcom "spent some time experimenting with" an open world and online features.

"But in the end, although we had some interesting concepts, we realized that it wasn't what fans wanted to see or play," said director Koshi Nakanishi. "So we went back to the drawing board, and created what led to Resident Evil Requiem."

You can see some footage from those online tests and experiments in the tweet below:

Another of the persistent rumours surrounding Resident Evil Requiem is that Leon will actually be playable, despite the focus currently being on newcomer Grace Ashcroft. Capcom even commented on Leon during the Spotlight livestream overnight, stating he wouldn't be a good fit for the type of horror in the game.

Resident Evil Requiem also sees a shift away from the rural areas of previous games to an urban setting: Raccoon City, 30 years after it was nuked. "This time it is more focused on the urban environment. And there are many scenarios that are set as a modern drama, including Raccoon City."
