It's not going great for MindsEye, the weirdly marketed third-person shooter that's just arrived on PS5.
The game hit Sony's console just a couple of days ago on the 10th June, but as reported by TheGamer, the platform holder is already dishing out refunds to early buyers.
As you may already know, PlayStation tends to be more... reluctant to offer refunds than its competitors. Generally speaking, a game has be busted — or close to it — for the process to go smoothly. The original, infamous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 comes to mind.
But apparently, MindsEye fits the bill. While not utterly unplayable on PS5 (as far as we know!), it's woefully optimised for the current-gen system. Reports of crashes have been fairly common, and the title regularly runs at sub-30 frames-per-second even on PS5 Pro (despite being capped at 30 in the first place).
This shockingly rough launch has also led to developer Build A Rocket Boy issuing an apology to players on social media.
Alongside the promise of an incoming 'hotfix' that'll attempt to address immediate performance problems, the studio writes: "A heartfelt thank you to all our day-one players. We know the launch of MindsEye hasn’t been without its challenges for some of you."
"Right now, our top priority is game performance. We understand that the requirements are high and have limited the experience for many of you, and for this, we sincerely apologize," it continues.
"Improving performance across all devices is our immediate focus. A patch that begins our commitment to address this is scheduled for the end of this week on PC, which will also roll out to consoles as soon as possible."
And of course, we need to reiterate that pre-release review code for MindsEye was not made available to media outlets like Push Square. As such, critic reviews are only just starting to find their way online — and they seem to be just as damning as you'd expect.
In our own MindsEye PS5 review, we called the game a "futuristic faceplant", concluding: "MindsEye is a broken, boring mess of a game that has somehow been allowed out in the world." A disastrous 3/10.
