The Witcher 4 Being Built for PS5 First and Foremost, Will Target 60fps 1

CD Projekt RED has, historically, focused on the PC versions of its games, and then dialled them down for console. But this hasn’t always been a successful strategy for the studio.

For example, many fans criticised the Polish studio for downgrading The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt prior to release, while Cyberpunk 2077’s issues on the PS4 at launch are well documented.

With The Witcher 4, the studio is focused on developing the game for the PS5 first and foremost.

“We always do PC and push [the technology] and try to scale down,” Charles Tremblay, the dev’s coding bigwig, told Digital Foundry. “This time, we want to be more console development first”

Tremblay continued that for the final product, the studio will be targeting 60fps, as seen in game’s recent Unreal Engine 5 demo. While this wasn’t necessarily representative of the product the studio will ship, it does seem like it’s a rough representation of what the developer has in mind.

We’re sure there will be compromises along the way, but from the way the studio’s talking, it does not want to go back to 30fps. And it believes 60fps is a realistic target for its next title on base PS5, although it does mention that realising that same ambition on the lower-specced Xbox Series S will be “extremely challenging”.
