This new shmup from legendary developer Ancient – the Beyond Oasis maker founded by composer Yuzo Koshiro, who scored all-time classics like Streets of Rage 2 – has been designed with original SEGA Genesis hardware in mind.
Due out on 31st July for both PS5 and PS4, the full game features eight stages, ultra-tight arcade gameplay, and a soaring sawtooth soundtrack that’ll take you right back to the 90s.
“With Earth’s resources depleted and its environment in ruin, most of humanity has fled to Mars,” the blurb reads. “But when hostile invaders launch an attack on Earth, mankind has no choice but to fight back. As environmental researcher Azusa Takanashi, you’ll pilot the state-of-the-art space fighter YK-IIA and mount the most important counterattack in human history. Losing is not an option!”
This game is actually going to ship on a real SEGA Genesis cartridge at some point, so you’re more than welcome for that. But if you want the convenience of playing it on contemporary hardware, then the console release is just a few short weeks away. It looks incredible.

Last night was the penultimate masterclass for the last module (music entrepreneur) on my three degree, and we had a guest speaker, Matt O’Grady, who produces/mixes for guitar based bands - You Me At Six, is the most well known band he’s done. And he raved about this game; mentioning the composer as he’s got links to him. Needless to say I’ll be all over this when it comes out.
What if I already miss those days every time I see another live service or deep cinematic experience?

This looks great. I'd love a remake of the classic c64 shooters like delta,armalyte,uridium,retrograde,zynaps,cybernoid 1+2 and wizball...I've got a bit of a nostalgia flu type thing this weekend.

There's the assumption that side scrolling, or twin stick shooters are simplistic affairs but if you watch videos on YouTube of a pro playing something like Nex Machina on Master difficulty it's any but. Looks more like video game poetry in motion.
@Brundleflies21 God I love nex machina. I agree when you see somebody who is totally in sync with a game its awesome to watch and these kind of games require zen like concentration.

@Stale-Bread because in Europe and the UK it was known as the mega drive. In North America it was the genesis and I think it was called that in Japan too..definitely the mega drive in the UK..

@Brundleflies21 I can't disagree with you. It is flawless in its execution and the games artistic design is superb. The only other twin stick shooters that I enjoyed as much were geometry wars and housmarques alienation which really needs a remake in the vein of helldivers 2..that would be just superb.
@Brundleflies21 Yeah sadly many gamers and gaming media nowadays don't want to understand that shmups, twin stick shooter, or side scroller games actually has a very solid gameplay depth. They always dismiss the genre as mindless shooter or like some junkfood games which is sad :/
I always comeback to games like Ikaruga, Dodonpachi, Gunbird, Raiden, Gradius, Nex Machina, etc because they always fun to play and even more fun with higher difficulty.

@PuppetMaster What I class as proper video game core mechanics usually executed without fault. They're like virtual chess but with your butt clenched tight enough to crack walnuts.

It was called Mega Drive in Japan as well.
It's only in the US, where it's called Genesis.
What shmups would you recommend i could play on the PS5/4 even if its an older game?

@PuppetMaster you should check it out as it's a corker. It takes a while to get used to its mechanics but it is very good. Decent challenge too.
@Northern_munkey This looks like a good game. Im not very good a shoot em ups at all and easily get overwhelmed by enemy fire or too much going on all at once so bullet hells are out of the question. I got one on switch the other day to go with my new arcade stick as it was £1.98 reduced from £9.99 but only got to the 3rd level. I might just have to stick to beat em ups lol. Hopefully when my adaptor comes i can bring my stick over to PS5 too. There are so many shooters/fighters on the switch its rediculous.
@Kidfunkadelic83 yeah I love them but I'm getting on a bit now and my reaction times are quite shocking sometimes..

@J2theEzzo Yeah they are some of the longest and most popular shmups. I'm just glad that both series still get rerelease for current gen platforms so young gamers can try it.
@LieutenantFatman Dragon Blaze, Blazing Chrome, Resogun, Huntdown, Nex Machina, R-Type, and Raiden are some of my favorites. But all in the list are great shmups 👍
@Warldorf That's the snobbery around certain sections of the console playerbase right there. If a game doesn't feature cutting edge graphics but has great gameplay it's not worthy of playing on a new console. Funny thing is you never hear the PC userbase who are more than likely playing on rigs which cost far in excess the price of any console and graphically more capable, complaining that a certain style of game is "beneath them" Ironic really as these people are singled out as being a "master race" Maybe they are in reflection to their positive attitude towards all gaming, retro or otherwise.
