@windxtravelerx " i don't think this is enough to let Sony decide what Arrowhead can or can't do with the game,"
Aside from owning the IP and paying Arrowhead to make the game? What do you think they need? Let's be clear here, Sony hold all the cards with this game regarding rights, ownership and distribution. That's also why there was the PSN and country debacle for the Steam version, it certainly wasn't Arrowhead's idea.
Arrowhead may or may not have had a say in porting the game to Xbox, but ultimately it was down to the whims of Sony.
It’s a live service game, it needs to be on as many machines as make sense. It isn’t a sign of the end times and I don’t see Sony porting single player games to Xbox as a rule. Well a proper Xbox not a random pc based device with The Xbox brand slapped all over it.
@truerbluer “ Controllers still use AA batteries / rechargeable option an additional purchase”
Non issue. Proprietary internal batteries are not a “better” option, and rechargeable AA’s are commonplace. Arguably one reason why the Dual Sense doesn’t last longer on a charge is because the internal battery isn’t physically large enough to have more capacity.
"Game Pass is more expensive on Xbox than PC for day 1 releases"
Console game pass also has 50 more games.
"Big talks about game preservation and forwards compatibility yet every Forza Horizon is delisted after a new one releases"
This is a licensing issue, it applies to all developers on all platforms. It's harder to justify license renewals when a game has reached a lower price point and will reach fewer users with it.
@Deshalu "Think about all the good stuff that Phil Spencer is actually doing. Yes it is from Spencer doing this. Back in 2013 the man literally said that he wanted to get rid of exclusives."
I find it difficult to give the man credit for wanting to do away with something that was holding them back or causing them lost marketshare because the other platforms were doing it.
It's like giving them credit for wanting cross play between consoles when they were one of the platform holders actively holding it back at the time. It was just his way of addressing lost sales to people who picked their console depending on what their Fortnite/Fifa/whatever mates were using.
Despite "Uncle Phil's" supposed humble consumer friendly angle, it's not difficult to see that these were business decisions not consumer first efforts. And that's fine in itself, but there is little point in pretending they are gifts from heaven.
Its a pattern that followed through to their studio acquisitions, "I'm not buying studios to put our games on other platforms" was basically a thing he said, that counters your own older quote. Then that changed because they needed to sell games to people to balance the books.
Spencer's "good things" are just ways to try and change how the market works because they were so bad at the way the industry traditionally operates. If Microsoft were more competent during the One debacle their attitude would have been very different for the last 15 years. I'm not saying that trying to change the industry is bad, just that they are only doing it because they went from a building generation, to a leading position to being third place in under 15 years.
@ElectricWizard "Don't think Sony owned a single studio 30 years ago. Releasing first party games, they weren't."
Well you would be wrong.
Firstly Sony bought Psygnosis in 93 and they shipped games for the US launch.
Secondly, before they were publicly called that in the 2000s, "Japan Studio" consisted of several teams in the 90s. Some games were contracted out, others developed internally.
One such internal studio, Poly's Entertainment shipped Motor Toon GP in 94 two weeks after the console launched, You may not have heard of the studio by that name, but that studio was renamed Polyphony Digital a few years later.
@Balaam_ My understanding is that rare have had multiple incidents of staff leaving en masse going back to the N64 days. The Stampers weren't great to work for I believe.
@Toot1st I believe Microsoft one of the biggest publishers on Playstation right now. Xbox is basically just the brand name for the entire gaming division.
@rjejr Which further raises the question as to why Microsoft feel the need to sack people while making insane profit. Well, because shareholders, but they aren't exactly skint.
@Skippermonkey "I will never understand the financial imperative to cancel a game after thousands (potentially hundreds of thousands) of person-hours have been expended"
Perfect Dark was announced 5 years ago, allegedly work started in 2018. Two years ago it was 2-3 years from release. Nothing has been shown since. I take the games cancellation as evidence it was stuck in development hell and not remotely close to re-emerging.
Sometimes it's cheaper to just set fire to the money spent than to continue throwing money at something that isn't progressing. It's not a great look but it is a damming indictment of the state of the games development. if it was close to being ready for renewed marketing then I doubt they would have cancelled it.
As for the Rare game, again it couldn't have been getting anywhere. Ubisoft should probably cut their losses on Beyond Good and Evil 2 as well.
It's a tale as old as time. Microsoft sack across the company people for increased profits and other KPI's, Spencer puts out a meaningless statement that contradicts itself.
This isn't to say that Microsoft are the only ones, but these division (or even greater company) layoffs have been happening at Microsoft repeatedly since Covid despite the revenue being made ($23bn in three months I believe) and they can't all be due to strategic development choices. Those choices seem to be coming because they are being told to make them as it's the easiest excuse and method to pick who you get rid of.
Of course the answer to the accusation of being a toy business is to sign a deal with a toy company and then take the movie proposal to the studios together. All 3 promote each other, everyone wins.
I mean that’s what movie studios and toy companies did in the 80s right and those often led to games.
@Chupa_loyzer Yeah, the game goes from effectively instant loading to having loading for the loading when you use a spinning platter drive. It completely breaks the flow of the game and is like watching a 4k YouTube video when your connection barely meets the minimum speed. A PC SSD works pretty well if it's decent enough but it suffers from a traditional hd and some parts of the game switch constantly.
This was tested heavily and borne out. The game concept works on older machines (PS1/DC has a similar concept in Soul reaver but vastly simplified), but not to remotely the same amount of assets.
@PaperAlien They never said anything about 8k gaming (although The Touryst renders at 8k then downsamples). That 8k could have meant anything, nothing stops the ps5 working on an 8k screen which is probably what they meant.
It was a mistake to put it on the box but it’s equally a mistake to assume it meant games being rendered in 8k. They advertise 4k games and very few games actually run natively in 4k on any of the capable consoles after all.
@Veritas7Ax Selling to the market that still exists ultimately. Although arguably it's only the uber franchises and low budget games that are still doing PS4 versions now?
@thefourfoldroot1 Onechanbara is developed by Tamsoft but published by D3 Publisher (the series started as part of the Simple 2000 Series along with EDF). D3 are publishing this game.
@SBBuds That character is the Onechanbara bonus costume. So the question is really why is a big sister slicing apart zombies while not wearing any clothes for a pun game name, but that's not a new question and not specifically related to this game.
@MaelysSedisia "Although most of you acting like you've never heard of Blackpink are obviously BSing for reasons too bizarre for me to want to even try and figure out... for those genuinely very not up on popular culture for whatever reason"
It's a an odd hill for you to climb on.
I hadn't posted a comment to be included in this, but I'm familiar with BlackPink as an entity, just as I am One Direction. Caring about them or knowing who the members are is a different thing entirely. For the same reason I'm not up on people on reality shows or who presents Loose Women. You can be "up on popular culture" and also not know who every singer from a pop band or fame hungry shagger on a reality show is, just like people who do in turn won't necessarily know every in-the-moment actor.
Pop culture is an extremely wide subject and we don't all listen to radio 1. Lots of people listen to bands and don't even know the members. Dave Gorman would call you an extractor fan. "I can't believe you don't know who this person is, and you call yourself a music fan(/pop culture fan) ?" is very much the vibe you are giving off.
@Matroska indeed, we already know that many titles in their launch window are split more evenly on average (some favour digital others physical) . It’s long term that it changes due to various reasons
@Fartingale What people ignore is that the video game retail charts were never intended for fanboy pissing contests in the first place. They are and have only ever been a way of collating sales data from retailers for the industry and other retailers. That’s why we only get limited information because it’s all paywalled and only vague statements are cleared for release without express permission from the publisher.
Their purpose and utility hasn’t changed for their core reason for existence. It’s the people complaining about them who aren’t even the target market that are the problem rather than the charts themselves.
If people want to argue about a games success they should wait for the monthly combined data
@SeaDaVie The heat sink size was reduced because it was completely over engineered in the first place. Sony would have done a lot of testing on that and there was enough third party testing to suggest there shouldn’t be an issue. Later models also generate less heat to start with due to die shrinks and component/motherboard/power supply design evolution. Less heat means less to cool.
I wouldn’t suggest that different models may not react differently, but the size of the cooling should be relative to the thermals and sizes of the various revisions and shouldn’t be an issue in normal circumstances. So a valid question is are these normal circumstances, I’m not sure they are.
@HammerKirby3 I havent played the Shadows edition but with the OG my recollection is that the 3d stages were more about perspective than gameplay, at least for the stages rather than the bosses.
Basically hold up and chain homing attacks rather than hold right and chain homing attacks. I would argue that without the 2d stages and the nostalgia factor that the “3d” stages wouldn’t have supported a game by themselves
It should be noted that Microsoft had already announced last month plans to cut 3% of jobs across all their businesses (despite $25bn revenue in 3 months) , so it's unclear if these losses are part of that figure or in addition to.
I wonder if the randomly timed announcement from last week was issued with full knowledge of this move as a way to head off concerns about the future?
@Nakatomi_Uk Microsoft/Nadella were open to closing the division after the One's failure. Spencer was the one who argued for it to remain open. They also considered closing it in '21 before deciding to throw the checkbook at publishers.
The problem with One was Mattick. The problem (like loss of identity and gambling everything on a model that was always going to stagnate) since is all Spencer. One X was a bit of positivity, but still struggled in the market.
As scandals go this is so low tier I’m more outraged by the outrage than the reason for it.
I’m far from pro-AI but there is definitely some exaggeration going on here. Would anyone really notice or care that much if they hadn’t been told? I doubt it. This is pretty trivial.
@nomither6 TBH I think BB was effectively put into conclusion mode as soon as Arc were able to get the GG IP back from Sega/Sammy. The BB team finished two games using the old tech while the GG team started working on Arc’s future direction by building the tech used in Xrd
@get2sammyb I don't think people even realise that there is a chance Sony is still not makiing any meaningful profit on consoles themselves, at least for the base machine.
All previous generations had effectively yearly pernament price drops in most years (usually in August for the UK at least) until they reached £80-100, which was how they attracted new customers.
@dskatter The designer is one of the studios co-founders, who also co-designed Myst and co-designed and produced Riven.
He also co-designed The Manhole, which would later become the first PC CD-ROM game, and third CDROM game on any format (after Fighting Street/Street Fighter I and Monster Lair on PCE CD)
@PuppetMaster "I'm not yet played the 1st game remake and i heard it wasn't good"
It's fine in all honesty. It's not like the original version of the first game was a masterpiece. I think it's one of those where people are complaining about a port/remake and not realising the issue is the source material.
@MFTWrecks Namco released some for Move (Big 3/ Time Crisis Razing Storm+Time Crisis 4+Deadstorm Pirates) but it doesn't look like they care much about VR.
@Nyne11Tyme Cerny is the hardware designer. He is not responsible for the physical case design or software features beyond those tied to hardware components. He doesn’t decide how the system software works, his job doesn’t change.
Sony aren’t changing from their current model, they have no reason or desire. Microsoft are changing because they have been struggling for the last decade+ and have thrown in the towel on the established business model they have failed at. Sony aren’t reacting to Microsoft because they don’t need to.

I’ve only played Zestiria, Graces F and recently Symphonia for the second time (after the GC version on UK launch). Oh and Eternia on PSP
For me Xillia would be the best one as while I have a PS3 the system is quite clunky in operation and I have access to the ps2 games.
However after Symphonia I’m sceptical they wouldn’t shaft us again on not bundling the duopoly as a single package.
Based on previous releases I don’t expect them to do any Japan exclusive games as I don’t see them making enough effort to commission a translation.

Re: PS5, PS4 Players Forced to Wait for House of the Dead 2 Remake
@PuppetMaster "I'm not yet played the 1st game remake and i heard it wasn't good"
It's fine in all honesty. It's not like the original version of the first game was a masterpiece. I think it's one of those where people are complaining about a port/remake and not realising the issue is the source material.
Re: PS5, PS4 Players Forced to Wait for House of the Dead 2 Remake
@MFTWrecks Namco released some for Move (Big 3/ Time Crisis Razing Storm+Time Crisis 4+Deadstorm Pirates) but it doesn't look like they care much about VR.

Re: The Next Xbox Is a PC, So What Does That Mean for PS6?
@Nyne11Tyme Cerny is the hardware designer. He is not responsible for the physical case design or software features beyond those tied to hardware components. He doesn’t decide how the system software works, his job doesn’t change.
Sony aren’t changing from their current model, they have no reason or desire. Microsoft are changing because they have been struggling for the last decade+ and have thrown in the towel on the established business model they have failed at. Sony aren’t reacting to Microsoft because they don’t need to.
