I think that they will cut the price of the base PS5 when they release (or maybe when they announce?) the PS5 Pro (late September?).
Maybe cut the Digital PS5 base model to £300 and the Disk to £390, with the PS5 Pro up at £500 (digital-only but compatible with the existing disk add-on).
I'll definitely pick up a PS5 Pro. I end up using the PS4 Pro sometimes when one of the kids is using the PS5, so having another console in the house would be handy and better resolution and ray-tracing would be nice.
I've been saying it since PSVR was announced (remember Project Morpheus?), but I'm still holding out hope for new Colony Wars and G-Police games in VR. My Wipeout VR wish came true eventually, so why not?
I liked Destruction Derby back on PS1, though I've got a feeling i never bought it, played a demo a lot, and maybe rented it from blockbuster.
I remember it being a bit of a one trick pony: once you'd got past the spectacle of cars getting wrecked there wasn't much game. I think DD2 had more 'proper' racing, but don't recall much beyond that.
One interesting nugget from the DAS interview is that the devs were pushing for it to be a PS+ title to reach the biggest audience, but that it took Sony a while to agree.
I'll definitely be playing when it comes out. PS+ games drop sometime tomorrow afternoon, right? Not available at midnight tonight?
Was in a really long work Teams meeting waiting for the bit relevant to me, so installed Remote Play on my PC and killed some time messing with Warframe builds on the PS5.
Not sure I'd want to use it for 'serious' gaming, but it's a useful feature.
One of the back ones for a USB HDD. The other back one for the new camera, or the free adaptor for the PS4 camera. The front USB-A for the PULSE 3D dongle.
And I'll plug my PSVR in where? Adaptor into USB-C?
Hope that a USB3 hub will work if plugged into the back...
I like the look of Destruction All-Stars, but if its online multiplayer relies on busy lobbies then its high price might be a problem (thinking back to RIGS...).
Maybe they'll do a demo or limited F2P mode to hook people? Or maybe it's a sleeper hit in the making? Not long to wait to find out...
I was really close to buying Spider Man when it was on sale, but didn't in the end. I've seen a couple of trailers but not much else, so I'll be getting the remastered version and MM and going in fairly cold.
I completely get why people feel short-changed though: an upgrade to the remastered version isn't much to ask, and won't eat into sales of MM itself..
I'm assuming that CP2077, as a PS4 game, could be installed to either the SSD or a USB HDD. I'll probably use a USB HDD for most old games, but if it's going to make a big difference to load times then I'll probably install CP to the SSD.
I fear that you are right. The original Playroom can't be uninstalled, so I'd be surprised if Astro's can.
Bit worried about how quickly I'm going to run out of space. I'm thinking that I'll probably want CP2077 on the SSD, even if it is the PS4 version, to improve load times. Add that to a couple of launch games and it will soon fill up.
Once I'm done with Astro's Playroom (don't get me wrong, me and the kids loved the Astro VR game), will I be able to delete it from the SSD, or shunt it to USB HDD for cold storage, redownload it from PSN for free forever? ANSWERS, DAMNIT, I NEED ANSWERS!
Now that MS have officially confirmed 10th November as their launch day, Sony need to respond. The only thing MS need to do before opening pre-orders is confirm the XSX price.
If I were Sony I would not want XSS and XSX pre-orders available before PS5 price and release date are announced. I think they now only have a matter of days to get the info out there before they start giving up next-gen market share.
Just noticed that the Amazon UK product page for PS5 on their Android app has been updated: there is now an option to register for a push notification when it's 'available'. Definitely wasn't there last time I checked (maybe a week ago).
Probably doesn't mean anything, and I'm getting my hopes up, but maybe, just maybe...
It's not as simple as just comparing raw TFLOP numbers, though.
For one thing, the metrics don't compare very well between the old and new GPU tech (I can't recall the details, but one TFLOP of current gen GPU power equates to less than one TFLOP of new GPU).
Second is the difference in CPU capability between the current gen Jaguars and the next gen Zen 2s.
Lastly is the speed difference between an SSD and HDD.
"Rumour has it that the S is really just a current XB1X which is no slouch but there you go."
Nope, the Series S has the same Zen CPU as the Series X. Only differences (AFAIK) are GPU size (same features, fewer compute units), SSD size and lack of optical drive.
I'm torn between the PS5 and the DE: I've been buying most games digitally this gen and I've got a standalone UHD BD player. My Pro's optical drive has recently failed, so I'm already living without access to some of the older games I've got on disk.
It feels like Microsoft's hand was forced overnight by the leaks. I doubt this is the way they had planned to reveal a new piece of hardware, but the price for the entry-level SKU is certainly competitive. I'd expect the DE to be £100 more.
I think they're better off launching before Christmas if they can, for all the obvious reasons, but also because the start of 2021 is unlikely to be much better than the end of 2020.
We may be watching the inauguration of President-for-Life Trump, while we in the UK endure/enjoy our new-found global trading opportunities.
Better to launch at the start of an economic meltdown than in the middle of one.
I am seriously considering the version without the disc drive.
A lot of my recent purchases have been digital. I know that I'm paying over the odds for day 1 purchases (and yes, the TLOU2 price markup did hurt), but there is a convenience factor, especially if you've got more than one PS4 in the household. I never sell old games (or old consoles for that matter), so resale isn't a factor. I'm not bothered about buying used games because anything I really care about is day 1 and anything else can wait for a PSN sale.
If the price difference is £50 or less then I'll probably go for the version with the disc drive, if there is enough stock for launch day.
A £100 difference and I'll probably go for the 'digital' edition. Trivial, I know, but I find the symmetry more appealing than the standard version and I imagine that there may be less competition for units at launch. A quick check of the few games I have on physical media only turned up a couple I would want to play again, and they're cheap on PSN.
I'd anticipate a £100 price difference for all the good reasons outlined above.
One thing that I don't understand (slightly off-topic) is why there's so much talk about the PS5 being under price pressure from the Series X: The XSX has a bigger APU and bigger SSD, so it's BOM must be higher than the PS5 with the disc drive, right? I get that Microsoft can use profits from its Azure, Windows and Office divisions to subsidise a low price point at launch, but that can't be sustained indefinitely, surely. If they are banking on a reduction in production costs to break even, then the same reduction would apply to Sony as well.
I get that the speculated XBox Lockhart would be cheaper than a PS5 due to its lower specs, but I don't get how the full-fat XSX would be.
Few years back I was predicting that the PS4 Pro would support 4k Blu-ray and not need the PSVR breakout box, so I could have gone with AlmostAlwaysWrong instead! We'll see how it pans out. Cheers.
From what Cerny said they've flipped the cooling problem around: instead of trying to ramp the fans up to cope with varying processor load, they're designing for consistent maximum load. Hopefully this means it'll be quiet, if not at least the jet engine noise will be constant!
Maybe that's why they revealed the noise-cancelling headphones at the same time as the console!
One HDMI 2.1 is a given. Optical audio out I think is unlikely, as is any secondary HDMI for audio or PSVR (I'm assuming the USB C on the front panel is the way they'll get video to the headset, no way the existing breakout box is going to handle the output from the main HDMI port). A couple of USB3 ports. Not sure whether they'll include the AUX port for the camera or not; my guess is that they go with a new proprietary connector or standard USB, no compatibility with the existing camera.
Yep, I'd agree with you on that. Sometimes it was a bit patchy, like they'd invested a lot of time and effort in some quests and interactions and had to rush others. Hopefully some of that was because it was a new IP and this time they'll be given all the time and resources they need to really nail it. I really rate HZD, but there were things in the early trailers which never made it into the game. One was multiple Tallnecks walking with a large group of other machines, whereas what we got were solo Tallnecks walking a set route with no AI at all, basically a mobile map reveal tower!
Slightly off-topic, but I was wondering whether part of the reason for the combination of a USB C and micro USB on the front of the PS5 could be to support the current PSVR. USB C can carry an HDMI feed AFAIK, so could we see an adaptor that plugs into the PS5's front ports and then straight into the PSVR headset cable (without needing the breakout box)?
Some of the dialogue was a bit cringe-inducing (particularly for some minor side quests), but it did have some genuine positives in there as well. One that sticks in my mind is some guy trying to nick Aloy's spear who asks how it works, for her to reply "you stick the pointy end in the machine". Hopefully they can be more consistent this time, but HZD is probably my favourite game this gen.
That's kind of what I was getting at with my post above. Cyberpunk will have to work on PS5, minimum is more stable or increased frame rate. You'll get faster loading times, but only if you opt to install on the SSD, rather than on an external HDD. Next option would be a patch with support for some next-gen features, maybe higher quality assets. Final option is a genuine PS5 version that fully utilises the SSD, hardware ray tracing, etc.
Horizontal would be easier for me. It would easily fit in the rack with amp, UHD blu-ray, etc, as it's sized for full size home cinema/hi-fi kit (43cm width) and cable runs would be easier.
I'd prefer vertical, but placement and practicality are a concern (and as @Jeremiah_Thor said, kids and cat!).
I just had another thought about cross-gen and upgrades: maybe there are three possible outcomes?
1: Existing PS4 game works on PS5. Games with unlocked framerate or dynamic resolution might get better performance. 2: PS4 game is patched to take advantage of some PS5 features, a bit like a PS4 Pro patch. Maybe performance/resolution modes, support for some new DualSense features, 3D audio, etc. 3: PS4 game re-released for PS5 (either free, upgrade fee or buy again, depending on publisher). Can take advantage of all PS5 features, including storage bandwidth and partial install.
The difference with option 3 is that the game would have to be installed on the SSD. An option 2 Pro-style patch could run from HDD. Maybe the restriction on where games need to be installed will force publishers to clearly brand things as 'remasters' if they need the SSD? MS will have exactly the same situation with the XSX.
I don't think there's been explicit confirmation of this, but it's certainly my assumption.
One thing that does occur to me is that anyone wanting to play many PS4 games (disc or download) on a PS5 would be wise to use a USB HDD to install them onto: PS5 games can only run from the built-in or expansion SSDs, and can be installed piecemeal to save space. A few big PS4 games are quickly going to eat up that precious space.
Digital Foundry have been very positive so far. They seemed to be particularly keen on Ratchet and Clank, with the dimensional switching thing being only possible with the SSD.
That seems likely. I was surprised by the number of games that they showed in the reveal, but they must be holding more back for closer to launch. Maybe a really brief teaser for the new GoW and Silent Hill to sweeten the bitter pill of the price?
Or it was just a rumour and we're not getting another Silent Hill any time soon. But that would make me sad, so I choose to believe the former.
I'm tempted by the Pulse 3D headphones; I normally use 5.1 speakers, but from what Cerny said they might not fully support multi-channel surround sound at launch and the headphones do look nice. Controller dock looks good, too, and I assume that the new camera is a must-have for BC with PSVR (unless they include the bespoke PS4 AUX socket...).

Re: Poll: When Do You Think Sony's Next State of Play Will Be?
I reckon there will be one soon for Destruction All-stars. There has still been very little revealed about the actual gameplay.
I think that Returnal and Kena will get covered, too, maybe at the same time as DAS, or maybe later in February.
Re: Lots of PS5 Games Given Release Windows, Including Solar Ash, Kena, and Stray
Kena is on my list. The kids loved the trailer.
Returnal is out in March, too, so maybe a couple of games for me.
Re: Cyberpunk 2077 Has a Consistent Crashing Issue on PS5 During Long Play Sessions

Ha, I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek, but given Trump's recent rallying cry of "12 more years!" and his current age it may not be far from the mark!

Horizon 2. Looking forward to seeing where they take the storyline and combat. Looked amazing.
RE8. Seemed a bit like RE7 crossed with RE4. I'm praying for PSVR support.
Deathloop: Combat looks intense, and I liked the 70s grindhouse vibe.
Lots of other interesting games besides these. Looks like launch and the first year should be pretty special.

Re: PS5 Is Gorgeous in Person, There Are Surprising Features
There is a placeholder page up on the UK Amazon site. Obviously no price or pre-order yet, but they've got the range of peripherals on there: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08B4G9HH2
